Madame C.J. Walker (1867–1919)
Rising from the cotton fields to become America’s first female self-made millionaire, Madame C.J. Walker used her hair care empire to fund racial uplift. She saw her wealth as a means to fight injustice and support her community.
Key Philanthropic Activities:
- Education: Funded scholarships for students at the Tuskegee Institute and other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
- Anti-Lynching: Donated $5,000 (a massive sum at the time) to the NAACP’s anti-lynching fund.
- Community Centers: Provided the largest contribution to save the blackened YMCA in Indianapolis.
- Women’s Independence: Trained thousands of Black women as “Walker Agents,” helping them achieve financial independence.
